If anyone's ever heard me rambling on about how what we know as "emo" today within the mainstream isn't actually Emo, well, this is my case. Emotive Hardcore, or "Emo," was sprung out from the harDCore scene, during what was known as the Revolution Summer. It was 1985, and hardcore kids were tired with what had become of their beloved DC hardcore scene, so they gave it a new twist. Going a bit more mid-tempo, using more melody, and writing more personal lyrics, as opposed to what had been the norm in hardcore: fast as fuck; angry as fuck; simple as fuck; condemnation of society and the government, bands started to pop up around DC. Some of the original Revolution Summer bands included Rites of Spring, Embrace, Grey Matter, and Embrace.
Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat produced this album, provided some backing vocals, and released it on his label, Dischord Records. He was a major player in Emo's beginnings. He later played in a band called Fugazi which featured members of Rites of Spring.
This particular album is actually a compilation of Rites of Spring's self-titled debut LP, their 7" EP, and one studio track that was previously unreleased. |
